About Upper Court

A Georgian manor, and a family home

Upper Court is a Grade II listed Georgian manor in the Gloucestershire countryside, built in 1760. It has been our family home for over forty years, and we open it to guests with its character intact and every modern comfort in place, so your group can settle in and enjoy the time together.

"We had a large family reunion so had the entire property to ourselves with ages ranging from 20 months to 80 years. Nobody was disappointed." - Kellie Hodge

A Warm Welcome from the Herford family

Upper Court suits guests who value nature, creativity and the warmth of a family-run estate. History and hospitality are part of everyday life here.

Bill and Diana Herford at Upper Court

Bill and Diana

Founders of the Upper Court hospitality business. They bought the manor more than fifty years ago with a vision to raise a family and offer English countryside stays for guests. They still live on the property, in the garden flat, attached to the manor house, though the day-to-day is now managed by the next generation.

Auriol Herford at Upper Court

Auriol

Auriol divides her time between Upper Court and West London, where she runs an art education business called Kite Studios. When she is at Upper Court, her family use the rooms in the attic. Auriol teaches art at the property during weekends and the holidays.

Oliver and Petra at Upper Court

Oliver and Petra

Oliver and Petra live in the Water Mill cottage with their children, Elias and Inna. Oliver runs pottery throwing sessions and bespoke workshops; Petra leads glazing and family-friendly pottery. Petra is also the one who welcomes you on arrival and is on hand throughout your stay, a familiar face on site for whatever you need, whenever you need it.

About Kemerton village

Kemerton sits on the northern slopes of Bredon Hill, in quiet country on the edge of the Cotswolds. It is a small village of around four hundred people, but an unusually complete one: a working pub, the Crown, with a cafe beside it, a village hall and more than one church, among them the Church of St Nicholas. Footpaths and bridleways lead straight from the village edge, linking the hill, the Kemerton nature reserve and neighbouring villages like Overbury, without needing the car.
